The Kingdom

Jesus is King

He is not a distant teacher or a mere prophet. He is King — over every nation, every power, and every heart.

King of kings, and Lord of lords

The title is his by right, and it is the name written upon him.

“And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Revelation 19:16 (KJB)

“[Who is] the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.”

1 Timothy 6:15 (KJB)

He made all things

His right to rule is the right of the Maker. All things were created by him and for him, so the whole creation is his by title — and every throne, dominion, and power holds its place under the One who made it.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

John 1:3 (KJB)

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

Colossians 1:16–17 (KJB)

“The earth [is] the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

Psalm 24:1 (KJB)

An everlasting kingdom

His reign does not end and cannot be destroyed. It is given to him by the Most High.

“The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”

Luke 1:32–33 (KJB)

“His dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.”

Daniel 7:14 (KJB)

Every knee shall bow

The whole creation will acknowledge him — not by force of arms, but as the truth that he is Lord.

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth; And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Philippians 2:10–11 (KJB)

Thy kingdom come

His kingdom is both promised and present — prayed for now, and one day filling the whole earth.

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven.”

Matthew 6:10 (KJB)

“The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

Revelation 11:15 (KJB)

“And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.”

Zechariah 14:9 (KJB)

One Lord, one King — and his name one.

Born a King

He was not made king by a council or a crowd. He was born a King — announced by angels in the city of David, and confessing before a governor that for this cause he came into the world.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

Luke 2:11 (KJB)

“Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”

John 18:37 (KJB)

The King in Zion

The throne of this King is set by God himself, and his inheritance is the nations. What earthly rulers seize by force, the Father gives to his Son.

“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”

Psalm 2:6 (KJB)

“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou [art] my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”

Psalm 2:7 (KJB)

“Ask of me, and I shall give [thee] the heathen [for] thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth [for] thy possession.”

Psalm 2:8 (KJB)

A King who reigns in righteousness

His government is unlike any other. He is at once our judge, our lawgiver, and our king; and under his rule, judgment and salvation meet together.

“Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.”

Isaiah 32:1 (KJB)

“For the LORD [is] our judge, the LORD [is] our lawgiver, the LORD [is] our king; he will save us.”

Isaiah 33:22 (KJB)

Foretold of old

The prophets saw his coming long before it came to pass — a child given, a ruler out of Bethlehem, a King riding in lowliness. Heaven kept its promise to the letter.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6 (KJB)

“Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there] [shall] [be] no end… The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

Isaiah 9:7 (KJB)

“But thou, Beth–lehem Ephratah… out of thee shall he come forth unto me [that] [is] to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth [have] [been] from of old, from everlasting.”

Micah 5:2 (KJB)

Proofs from prophecy

Foretold, and fulfilled

Hundreds of years before he was born, the prophets described the King in remarkable detail — the family he would come from, the town of his birth, the manner of his coming, his suffering, and his reign. The record of the gospel answers to each one like a key to its lock.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Genesis 3:15 (KJB) — fulfilled in Galatians 4:4

“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him [shall] the gathering of the people [be].”

Genesis 49:10 (KJB) — fulfilled in Hebrews 7:14

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Isaiah 7:14 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 1:22–23

“I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.”

Isaiah 50:6 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 26:67

“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”

Isaiah 53:7 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 27:12–14

“They pierced my hands and my feet.”

Psalm 22:16 (KJB) — fulfilled in John 20:25–27

“They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.”

Psalm 22:18 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 27:35

“They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”

Psalm 69:21 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 27:34

“For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.”

Psalm 16:10 (KJB) — fulfilled in Acts 2:31

“The stone [which] the builders refused is become the head [stone] of the corner.”

Psalm 118:22 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 21:42

“Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he [is] just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

Zechariah 9:9 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 21:4–5

“They shall look upon me whom they have pierced.”

Zechariah 12:10 (KJB) — fulfilled in John 19:37

“I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.”

Jeremiah 23:5 (KJB) — fulfilled in Luke 1:32–33

“Behold, [one] like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days.”

Daniel 7:13 (KJB) — fulfilled in Matthew 26:64

Prophecy written centuries beforehand, fulfilled to the letter — the King foretold is the King who came.

Worthy is the Lamb

This King is also the Lamb who was slain. His crown is won not by conquest but by sacrifice, and the song of heaven is his worthiness.

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”

Revelation 5:12 (KJB)

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things.”

Revelation 4:11 (KJB)

“Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for [so] I am.”

John 13:13 (KJB)

Questions on the King

Is Jesus King now, or only in the future?

Both. He is King of kings and Lord of lords now (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 19:16), and his kingdom shall have no end (Luke 1:33). The day is coming when every knee shall bow to him (Philippians 2:10–11).

Is his kingdom an earthly government?

No. “My kingdom is not of this world,” he said (John 18:36, KJB). His servants do not fight to set it up; it is a kingdom of truth and of the heart, advancing by the word, not the sword.

What does it mean to confess him as King?

To own him as Lord with your mouth and believe him in your heart. “Every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:11, KJB)

Will his kingdom ever end?

Never. “Of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:33, KJB), and his dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not be destroyed (Daniel 7:14).
